my familys Go-to in calabash, nc

A friend of mine brought it to my attention that I am not very good about sharing the names of some of my family’s favorite go-to places when we visit North Myrtle Beach. So today I bring you Coleman’s Original Calabash Restaurant.

Any time we are in North Myrtle and are in the mood for seafood we make the short drive back into NC to visit our favorite fish camp in Calabash, NC. Coleman’s in located right on the intercoastal waterway among several other fish camps. If you can, get a seat by the window and you check out the birds in the swamp waters or even watch the deep sea fishing boats divvy up the days catch.Don’t let the empty parking spots fool you either, we went to dinner early, this place is a complete gem.

Yes, there are tons of seafood buffets along the strip, but who needs an overpriced seafood buffet where you are guaranteed to pay to much and eat to much in an effort to get your moneys worth? Plus, my family has been coming to Coleman’s for the better part of the past 15 years and it has kind of become a family tradition.

Really, I go just for the hushpuppies. These hushpuppies are more like savory funnel cakes and are fantastic topped with tartar sauce or honey butter…or both.

At Coleman’s, we always order a combination platter that usually includes a combination of shrimp, clam strips, fried oysters, flounder, and/or deviled crab. These platters are offered in several different portion sizes to fit any appetite. Childrens/senior (that can be ordered by anyone, none of that under 12 or over 55 stuff going on here), small, or large and each portion is very reasonably priced.

Since I have a tendency to fill up hushpuppies (and have no intention of changing that habit) B and I usually get one of the smaller portions to split. The picture above is just my part of the platter that we ordered, and we both walked out comfortably full with our (err…my, since B isn’t a huge fried seafood lover) craving for delicious, fried seafood completely satisfied.

If you have never been to Calabash or are looking for delicious, affordable seafood when in the area I definitely recommend you give Coleman’s a try. It is one of my family’s favorites and it might become one of yours too.
